USA Masters Ski Jumping National Championships
February 1-2, 2003
Iola Winter Sports Club, Iola WI

Norseman Hill The 2003 Masters Age Group Championships were hosted Feb. 1-2 by the Iola Winter Sports Club at their beautiful ski bowl, Norseman Hill, outside of Iola in east-central Wisconsin. Hosts folded the Masters events into a busy weekend starting with the Badger State Games and including annual Iola Winter Carnival jumping. Iola volunteers did a good job under very difficult circumstances. The bad news was that there was no snow anywhere in the lower two thirds of Central ski jumping land; the good news was that a long spell of bitter cold provided day after day of perfect snow making weather. Iola obtained snow guns from St. Paul and quickly assembled the required pumps, tanks and hoses, and club members spent many long days and nights learning to make snow on a ski jump.

Then, just as the weary crew prepared to open the hills, mother nature dropped about five inches of new snow on the whole scene including the five jumping hills, K-5, 10, 20, 40, 60. This beautified the ski bowl and made cross country skiing possible, but it required cleaning all new snow from five inruns and half of the snow from two landing hills.

Sig and Bob On Saturday evening, the Masters group gathered at the country club for chicken and ribs, talk and fellowship. All Masters jumping events ran on Sunday, Feb. 2, with the seventeen Masters competitors choosing one or two from three competitions on hills of size 20, 40, and 60 meters. Two Class 5 Masters (ages 70-79), jumping judge Bob Immens and Sig Malvik, the Iola club official in charge during the construction of the new 60 meter tower, were active throughout the weekend but neither chose to register and put on his skis. (See photo at left.)

Saturday's Badger State jumping enjoyed temperatures around freezing but Sunday's forecast included snow and rain. The rain never materialized and the snow held off until the long day of competition was finished. On the 40 meter hill, Masters III jumper Tim Denisson, once a U.S. Ski Team member, emerged the top scorer, barely edging the best junior jumpers. All small hill competitions ran well, but troubles started on the 60 meter jump. A team of local and visiting experts on track preparation cut a nice deep track but Bob Keck and Don West were unable to correct a sticky spot in the inrun transition.

The anticipated 60 meter shootout between many-time champion Scott Smith and young guns Brian Sanders and John Keck never materialized. Smith registered but decided not to ski, Keck returned to Minneapolis after losing a ski on Silvermine Hill in Eau Claire, and Sanders withdrew after his trial jump. In fact, all of the younger Masters withdrew either before or after the trial ride, leaving just two, Bob Keck (aged 64) and Don West (65) to continue their 50 year rivalry. (See photo at right.) Finally, the Competition Jury wisely decided to stop the 60 meter competition after a single competitive round, before anyone was hurt.

The results below are presented in the order in which the competitions were conducted.
